WHO
Free Range Designs is the personal brand for me, designer Michael Western {aka 'the Design Farmer'}. Free Range is a passionate, owner operated company that truly cares about our clients and their businesses.
WHAT
First and foremost I design. This is what I love but the important thing is creating a design that works for you. With my extensive experience in business and my training in marketing, I will work with you to truly understand what you are trying to achieve with your business and work hard to help you attain it.
WHEN

WHERE
I live on the East Coast of Canada, but thankfully with technology today I can offer most of my service anywhere across our beautiful country and beyond. We can review designs over the computer and conduct meetings on the phone or through Skype. If you like my work, it doesn't matter where you live, we can make it work. But the best thing...shipping your website or designs is free.
WHY
I do this because I love it. I know it sounds cliche but it's true. I love making a blank canvas come alive. I'm not an artist, I'm a designer, I solve problems. This is what I love to do.
HOW
I design out of my home in Crescent Beach, Nova Scotia. Once my morning coffee is in my hand I say goodbye to Rosie and our kids and head to the studio to spend time with my other love. Using all the newest Adobe software and up to date advanced styling techniques it doesn't take long for the creative juices to start flowing.

THE PHILOSOPHY
The whole point of design is to convey a message. Good design conveys a message as quickly and simply as possible.
The visual stimulus out there is greater then it has ever been. This is why it is so important to not only capture the attention of your target audience but to convey your message in a clear succinct manner. Free Range uses a combination of creative, outside the box ideas, vibrant colour, premium typography, textures and an emphasis on simplicity to create a bespoke design that will help you achieve your professional goals.
THE PROCESS
Step 1: Coffee
It just makes everything else on this list that much better. Especially with a little Baileys.
Step 2: Meeting of the Minds
The most important part of this process is hearing from you exactly what it is that you want to achieve.
Step 3: Brilliant Ideas
Now it's time to brainstorm that perfect concept for the design. Once you approve of the direction I'm heading, it's time for the fun part.
Step 4: Create & Build
I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't truly enjoy seeing an idea come together.
Step 5: Revise and Tweak
We will review the design and test the site together and make any tweaks if necessary.
Step 6: Another Happy Client
It is important to enjoy the process but getting great feedback from a thrilled client is where the real satisfaction lies. And then you pay me :)

ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL
It is important to start any web job by figuring out the best and most economical way to build your site. You may only need a one page business card style site or a full blown content management system. There are many different online solutions out there today. Let's make sure we choose the right one for you.
WHEN ENOUGH IS ENOUGH
It's exciting times for building websites. With the styling techniques, if you can think it, it can be created. There are so many bells and whistles to help make a site come alive but it is important to use these like spices. A sprinkle here and there to enhance the interest and usability of a site but watch how much you use because a site can quickly become over seasoned and unfocused.

Good Website design is not just about how it looks but also how it works. Having been trained in many areas of design and programming, I will ensure you get a site that is seamless in both appearance and integration.
ECONOMIES OF SCALE
While creating your website, I will have an artboard filled with design assets such as patterns, textures, fonts and images used in the design. Since I have these assets handy why not let me style business cards, pamphlets or print ads to look similar to your website. I have a special spot in my heart for print design. Any designer who cares about the art of design should. Unlike websites, where your design will look different depending on the screen size and the browser, everyone will see your print design exactly the same. If you are a craftsman that always strives for perfection, you know print design is the closest you are going to get to it.
SIMPLICITY
Like with web design, it is extremely important with print design to keep it simple. Due to space constraints of print design, people often try to cram so much info into a print ad, poster or business card that viewers are put off before they even get to the main message. Free Range will keep sight of what you are trying to say and create a design that will clearly and creatively convey that message.
